Storm-caused sinkhole closes Stewart Drive crosswalk
A curbside sinkhole created by recent storms and a failed culvert has shut down the Stewart Drive crosswalk over Tiburon Boulevard until further notice.
However, traffic going in and out of the Reed Heights and Tiburon Knolls neighborhood there isn’t currently impacted, as the 10-foot wide, 9-foot deep hole is on the Richardson Bay side, across the boulevard.
Spokesperson Matt O’Donnell of Caltrans, which controls Tiburon Boulevard as State Route 131, said the hole was discovered late Jan. 24 and called it an emergency job with stabilization efforts that began Jan. 26. He said one-way traffic control is likely in order, and a schedule was still being developed.
The closure does force a lengthy detour for neighborhood pedestrians who want to reach the Old Rail Trail, Blackie’s Pasture and McKengney Green.
The detour at Stewart Drive goes inbound along Virginia Drive, cuts through Del Mar Middle School's tennis courts and campus out to Avenida Miraflores before crossing Tiburon Boulevard at Pine Terrace, according to a map provided by the town. From there, residents can use the Old Rail Trail to reach downtown or turn back to reach the parks.
