About 10 miles into running a stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail near Lake Tahoe with the informal crew of middle-aged Marin runners who call themselves TROT, Tiburon resident Park Allen felt an odd sensation under his foot.

Allen, 54, and the group of about 10 other men were deep in the woods, many miles from the car. He stopped to inspect his foot.

“I looked down and the entirety of the bottom of my shoe had come loose,” he said. “It was holding on by maybe a half an inch of glue.”

That 2023 story, the runners say, is one of dozens that have bonded TROT over 25 years of running together. The group, which varies in membership but centers on about 10 men from Tiburon and Mill Valley, has completed six major runs since 2021 — what Tiburon resident Bryan Breckenridge calls their informal “ultramarathons” — ranging from about 20 to 50 miles.
