Traffic officials add sixth bus to relieve crowded school routes
A sixth school bus was scheduled to start running Reed Union School District routes Sept. 8 to relieve crowding that has left 24 students on a waiting list and 10 of 16 routes over capacity.
The Tiburon Peninsula Traffic Alliance board approved the bus and a driver at a special meeting Sept. 1, at an estimated cost of $140,000, and amended its fiscal 2026-2027 budget to pay for it. Bus provider First Student was expected to have a bus and a standby driver in place, according to a staff memo to the board, with a permanent driver to be hired later.
The alliance is a joint-powers agency of the town of Tiburon, the city of Belvedere and the Reed Union School District. The vote was 5-0, with board members Liz Webb and Isaac Nikfar absent and Tiburon Town Manager Greg Chanis voting as the town’s alternate representative.
The alliance had budgeted for 850 passes this school year. By Aug. 31 it had sold more than 1,000, leaving 10 of the district’s 16 routes with more pass holders than seats and 24 students on waiting lists across six routes.
