Two arrested in string of credit card thefts from vehicles at Blackie’s lot

Two men were arrested on suspicion of stealing credit and debit cards from vehicles at Blackie’s Pasture and using them at Bay Area stores, the Tiburon Police Department said.

Several people reported cards taken from their cars at the Tiburon trailhead on the morning of Sept. 5 while they walked the Old Rail Trail, the department said in a Sept. 8 news release. The cards were used later at businesses in San Francisco and at The Village at Corte Madera shopping center.

Officers identified a gray Ford Explorer using the town’s automated license-plate readers. The Explorer entered Tiburon shortly before the thefts and headed toward Corte Madera afterward, the release said. Investigators also reviewed security footage from stores where the cards were used.

Officers found the Explorer at a Strawberry motel early Sept. 6 and detained two men, ages 64 and 55. They then obtained a warrant to search the men’s room. Inside they found newly purchased merchandise, receipts tied to fraudulent transactions, suspected false identification documents and what the department called burglary tools, the release said.

Both were booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of theft, fraud and conspiracy, and police said one of them also had an outstanding felony warrant from Orange County. Read the complete story in our e-edition, or SUBSCRIBE NOW for home delivery and access to the digital replica.
