Belvedere resident helps develop health check using single blood test

Belvedere resident Peter Ganz says serendipity led him to the discovery that a single sample of blood can inform the health of the entire human body. Ganz, 69, recently co-authored a study published in Nature Medicine that found measuring the levels of 5,000 different proteins in a sample of blood plasma can help researchers determine the likelihood of certain ailments, like cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and could someday be used to gauge the health of every organ in the body. Eventually, the blood test, dubbed the “liquid health check,” may be able to inform a hundred or more diseases and states of health specific to people living in different parts of the world, Ganz says.
