‘Education’ over enforcement remains focus amid coronavirus spike

Amid a surge in coronavirus cases that has put Marin under a shelter-in-place order through Jan. 4, Tiburon has seen a 37-percent spike in new cases over the past month alone, with a 30-percent increase in Belvedere and a 60-percent surge in Strawberry. But despite the spike in cases across the county and locally, public officials and law-enforcement agencies say they’ll continue to seek voluntary compliance with Marin’s and California’s virus-management mandates, saying the focus will remain on education over enforcement. “The continued rise in COVID-19 cases is cause for significant concern, particularly as it relates to the capacity of our medical system,” Tiburon Town Manager Greg Chanis said. “We have said from Day 1 we’re going to rely on education and people understanding their responsibility. Given the level of staffing in our Police Department, stricter enforcement of the myriad restrictions currently in place is not practical.”
