Like many in their circle, longtime friends Maureen “Moe” Riley and Daria Lovette got caught up in the nationwide mahjong revival about a year ago.

The two San Rafael residents each began having mahjong teachers to their homes after a friend asked whether they were interested in learning to play.

By May, in the middle of a game, they realized they wanted a dedicated space where they could touch and feel tiles and build community.

Their store, California Mahjong House, opened Aug. 26 on Ark Row. It sells tiles, mats, racks, bags and accessories such as hats and cocktail napkins, and players can join open play or take lessons at its eight tables.
