John Bernard Arado

John Bernard Arado, a longtime Tiburon resident, died May 19 after a long illness. He was 83.

Mr. Arado was born and raised in San Francisco and earned his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering at the University of California at Berkeley.

Mr. Arado then was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy and served aboard ship during the Korean War. When he returned to the U.S., he taught marine engineering at the Naval Academy.

After leaving the Navy, Mr. Arado joined Chevron. He began as an engineer at the Richmond refinery and retired as vice president of shipping.

He and his wife, Theresa, whom he met in San Francisco, were married in 1961 and moved to Tiburon in 1973. They were members of the St. Hilary Catholic Parish.

"He was an avid Mr. Fix-It," said his son, Tony. "He loved working on cars and household projects. After his retirement, he got very much into computer technology and built his own computer."

Mrs. Arado died in 2012.

In addition to son Tony Arado of Danville, Mr. Arado is survived by daughter Susan Arado Ruby of Walnut Creek; two grandchildren, Lauren and John; a sister, Isabelle Hidzick of San Mateo; two nieces; and a nephew.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. June 19 at St. Hilary Catholic Parish, 761 Hilary Drive, Tiburon.
