Tiburon OKs smaller library expansion

The Tiburon Town Council has signed off on a slimmer, shorter and cheaper version of the Belvedere-Tiburon Library’s 2012 expansion plans, despite objections from a citizen group that it shouldn’t do so until the town knows how much taxpayer money will be needed to close any funding gap. At its Aug. 15 meeting, the council voted 4-0 to approve the new $18 million plan, which calls for a 9,725-square-foot, one-story addition to the existing 10,500-square-foot library, bringing the final size up to 20,250 square feet. But with a public-funding request still looming, the attorney for a coalition of Tiburon and Belvedere residents, called the Citizens for Fiscal Responsibility, asserted in a letter that the town hadn’t adequately notified residents about the full scope of the project, including failing to erect story poles and to consider the role of public financing in deliberating the revised size.
