Open seat on Tiburon fire board as member steps down

Longtime Tiburon Fire Protection District board member Steve Sears has resigned his post mid-term after moving to Florida, creating an immediate vacancy on the five-member board.

Sears — best known in the community for his 40 years as co-owner of Sam’s Anchor Cafe and volunteer leadership — submitted his resignation after the fire board’s Sept. 8 meeting. Under state law, the remaining members of the board have 60 days to fill the vacancy by appointment or call for a special election; if it doesn’t do either, the decision will be up to the Marin Board of Supervisors.

Fire Chief Richard Pearce on Sept. 23 posted the vacancy notice seeking applications, due by 5 p.m. Oct. 8. To be eligible, candidates must live in the district’s boundaries, which include all of Tiburon east of about Trestle Glen Boulevard; the chosen candidate would serve the remainder of Sears’ term, through November 2024.
