Popular Angel Island trail reopens after landslide
The popular Perimeter Road trail on Angel Island has fully reopened to pedestrians and cyclists — with a significant detour — after the past several weeks of storms triggered a massive landslide that caused a section of the road to completely collapse.
The closed section of the trail runs from the historic Rock Crusher structure to Four Corners on the southern and southwestern side of the island — the portion of the 5.5-mile loop of the island that boasts some of the best views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Park spokesperson Casey Dexter-Lee said crews finished a detour Jan. 26 that will allow uninterrupted pedestrian and cyclist access, though she said it will likely be at least eight months before the road is passable by vehicle.
When tram rides around the island resume later this month, new temporary routes will be designed that will give riders most but not all of the views they would see when Perimeter Road is completely open. There likely will be some doubling back.
