Proposed Old Rail Trail mural would honor Tiburon’s dairy past

Little Reed Dairy, located on what is today the site of Del Mar Middle School, was one of three Portuguese dairy farms operating in Tiburon in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The dairy would be the subject of a mural proposed for a concrete retaining wall along the Old Rail Trail; the project recently earned the support of the town’s Heritage and Arts Commission. A concrete retaining wall along Tiburon’s Old Rail Trail could soon sport a new tile mural honoring one of the town’s historical Portuguese dairy farms.

The Tiburon Heritage and Arts Commission at its July 27 teleconference meeting voted 5-0 to approve the proposed mural featuring Little Reed Dairy, which was one of three dairies operated by local families early in Tiburon’s modern history and was located on the land that today is home to Del Mar Middle School.

The mural would be installed on a roughly 4-foot-high by 10-foot-wide concrete retaining wall along the pedestrian path, near the intersection of Tiburon Boulevard and Avenida Miraflores by Del Mar. The proposal will need final approval from the Town Council and may first be referred to the Parks, Open Space and Trails Commission for review as the concrete wall is within the town’s Richardson Bay Lineal Park
