Reed district shoots down idea to let kids Zoom into class

The Reed Union School District won’t explore allowing students who have opted out of in-person instruction amid the pandemic to participate in on-campus classes via Zoom, something a group of local parents has been advocating over the past few months. In discussions at their Nov. 17 teleconference meeting, members of the district board generally agreed they weren’t interested in pursuing what’s known as the hybrid-flexible or hyflex model, in which students at home participate remotely in the same classes attended by their in-person peers, noting the district’s administration and teachers have recommended against it as disruptive for all learners. Instead, the district will focus on continuing to improve its extended distance-learning offerings designed to bridge the gap for medically vulnerable families waiting on a vaccine as well as those who simply don’t yet feel comfortable sending their children back to class.
