Residents debate school redistricting effort at East Corte Madera forum

A petition seeking to transfer a portion of East Corte Madera out of the Reed Union School District received an emphatic rebuke from many residents of the neighborhood at a Nov. 30 forum, with the majority of speakers decrying the effort as divisive and rife with misinformation.

Some six dozen or so people showed up to the meeting, which was held at The Cove School in East Corte Madera and was hosted by the County Committee on School District Organization, the group that has been tasked with ruling on the territory transfer request. It was the first of two opportunities for the public to weigh in on the topic; a second meeting to gather feedback will be held Dec. 15 at Del Mar Middle School.

About a dozen people expressed their support for the controversial redistricting effort, while more than twice that number, about 30, spoke in opposition and urged the committee to deny the petition, which seeks to move some 17 streets in East Corte Madera — the area west of Ring Mountain, south of Paradise Drive and between El Camino Drive and Westward Drive — into the Larkspur-Corte Madera School District.
