Ryan takes over as Tiburon mayor, Griffin is vice mayor

Town Councilmember Jack Ryan is Tiburon’s new mayor after being elected by his colleagues at the council’s Dec. 7 meeting, which also included the election of Noah Griffin as vice mayor and the swearing in of Ryan and two other re-elected members to new terms.

Ryan, who served as vice mayor for the past year, succeeds Jon Welner.

Councilmembers typically hold the mayoral post on a yearly rotation; Griffin’s election as vice mayor puts him in line to be mayor for the first time December 2023.

Tiburon has a council-manager government system in which the mayor and vice mayor are nominated by the members of the elected, volunteer council. The titles are mostly ceremonial, as Town Manager Greg Chanis is a CEO-like professional hired by the board to oversee the bulk of the town’s daily tasks.

Near the top of the meeting, Ryan, Welner and Councilmember Alice Fredericks were sworn into office — Ryan to his first full term after being elected to an interim seat in March 2020, Welner to his second term and Fredericks to an unprecedented sixth term. All three fended off a challenge from Parks, Open Space and Trails Commissioner Isaac Nikfar in the Nov. 8 election.
