Tiburon's Slow Streets program won’t extend into fall

After receiving lukewarm support from residents and business owners, Tiburon’s Slow Streets program won’t be extended into the fall — though the town has pledged to explore ways to rework the initiative for next summer and come up with other ideas to make downtown more lively.

The Tiburon Town Council had approved the program, which closes lower Main Street to vehicle traffic Friday afternoons to Sunday evenings through October to allow for al-fresco dining and curbside shopping, on a seven-week trial run — weekends from June 18 to Aug. 1 — saying it would then review the program’s impacts before making a decision about its future.

Reaction from the public on the Slow Streets program ultimately proved to be mixed, with several businesses on Ark Row and lower Main Street saying the program hurt business, and even some residents saying they stayed away because of parking difficulties and that walking Main was like an "obstacle course."
