Candidate filing period to open for 11 elected bodies

Tiburon Peninsula residents will have a chance to run for seats on 11 local and county elected boards this November, but to get on the ballot they’ll have to start throwing their hats into the ring starting next week.

Belvedere’s City Council race has the biggest potential for a battle, with three expiring terms representing a majority of the council and two controversial projects in the works: the redevelopment of the private Mallard Pointe community near City Hall into 42 units of apartments and single-family homes, plus the council-backed $20 million Protect Belvedere project, a road-hardening infrastructure proposal that requires voters to approve a city charter and tax measure on the same ballot. Opponents of the latter project have signaled they could put up a slate of candidates.

Two of the seats are for councilmembers seen as leading the Protect Belvedere campaign: Mayor Sally Wilkinson, who says she’ll run to retain her seat, and James Campbell, who is in his second term and will not seek a third, honoring a longstanding city custom and guaranteeing at least one newcomer on the board. The third seat belongs to Peter Mark, who was recently appointed to fill a vacancy left by the resignation of Steve Block in March and who must now run if he wants to retain the seat; he could not be reached by press time.

The candidate filing period opens July 18 for the Nov. 7 election, with terms also expiring on the Tiburon council; the Reed Union school and the Tiburon and Southern Marin fire district boards; the Strawberry Recreation District board; and two local sanitary districts, among others.
