When Bertrand Delhom was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2021, he had a sense of what he was in for. His grandmother had Parkinson’s, and he says it was challenging to observe the toll the disease took on her.
Delhom, of France, says he was immediately worried about how the diagnosis would affect him and his family, which includes three children and seven grandchildren.
He says he realized he had a choice: give in to the disease or fight to live despite it.
“Living with it, obviously — we don’t really have a choice there — but we do have the choice not to live,” says Delhom, now 62. “And I’ve chosen to live with it.”
For Delhom, living with Parkinson’s has meant combining his passion for sailing with a desire to raise awareness about the disease. The lifelong sailor, who became the first person with Parkinson’s to complete a circumnavigation during the 2023 Ocean Globe Race, will be one of the guests of honor at the inaugural Sailing4Parkinson’s regatta, set for April 11-12 at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon. The event, which will mark World Parkinson’s Day on April 11, benefits both the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and the Parkinson Association of Northern California.
