Election 2022: June ballot will pose renewal of county parks tax

Marin voters will decide next month whether to renew a quarter-cent sales tax that generates about $14 million annually to maintain parks and open spaces, including on the Tiburon Peninsula.

The tax, known as Measure A, was first approved by voters in 2012 but expired at the end of March. A nine-year renewal will appear on the ballot for the June 7 primary election. If approved by a two-thirds’ majority, the tax would be reimposed starting Oct. 1, with Marin County Parks seeing revenue beginning in November.

Parks Director and General Manager Max Korten previously said the department has enough on hand in its reserves to ensure department operations continue during the gap, though allocations to cities, towns and special districts — including Tiburon, Belvedere and the Strawberry Recreation District — are expected to decrease in fiscal 2023, which begins July 1, as a result of the reduced revenue.
