Natalie Newbury and Kevin Garrett aren’t letting the wind and light rain stop them from getting their steps in on the Old Rail Trail on March 31.

“Ten K steps is a goal — every day,” says Newbury, who was back home in Tiburon on spring break from California State University at Long Beach. “And yeah, it’s really pretty. I used to bike down here as a kid, so a little bit nostalgic.”

Newbury, 19, and Garrett, 20, are high-school sweethearts who met in an Advanced Placement photography class at Tamalpais High School. They sat next to each other because neither of them knew anyone else in class.

“We kind of just started talking every day, and then we ended up going to prom together,” Newbury says. “And after that, we just started going on dates.”

The couple also enjoys traveling together, whether to farther destinations, like a trip last year to an all-inclusive resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, or a more recent getaway to the Mountain Home Inn near Mount Tamalpais to celebrate Garrett’s birthday March 25.
