Julia Rivo has a camcorder in hand working on a school project in downtown Tiburon on May 13.
The Redwood High School sophomore and Tiburon resident is collecting B-roll, supplemental footage for a video story, near the Edward Zelinsky Landing as part of a journalism class assignment.
Julia is a cub reporter for the Redwood Bark, the school’s award-winning newspaper. As part of the school’s three-year journalism program, 10th-graders take a nonfiction English elective that focuses on journalism fundamentals and media literacy. Students in that class produce a junior version of The Bark and are mentored by Bark staff.
Students who complete that class can then apply in 11th or 12th grade for the advanced journalism program, in which they write, edit and design The Bark’s monthly print edition and website, produce a podcast and run the paper’s social-media channels.
“What actually inspired me to get started in Bark was just the chance to connect with such a variety of people, both in the class and then also getting the opportunity to interview new people and learn about new stories in my community,” says Julia, who attended Reed Union district schools.
