I’ve scoured the local plant nurseries for gift ideas. I didn’t see anything earthshakingly new, though there are still many interesting things out there for the gardener in your life.
Winter is a good time to plant citrus trees, and local nurseries have many options. If you don’t already have a Meyer lemon tree, this would be a good time to consider one. They’re grafted onto dwarf root stock, so they stay relatively small. I planted one about 20 years ago. It’s only about 5 feet tall and has a shrub-like profile, so the fruit is very easy to pick without a ladder.
The big advantage to the Meyer lemon is that they are simultaneously producing flowers, tiny green fruits and maturing lemons, so you have ripening fruit all year. Some people prefer the grocery store lemon, typically a Eureka, but those are a much larger tree than the Meyer. If you need a lemon and you have a Meyer tree, chances are you’ll just go out and pick one versus driving to the store.
Ground home and garden store at 1520 Tiburon Blvd. has an interesting selection of garden-themed gift items. They carry Fermob French garden furniture, which comes in many styles and colors; it’s pricey but very durable. They also sell a line of comfy heated outdoor chairs and love seats, which sound pretty good this time of year.
