Tiburon resident trades tech career for Detroit-style pizza

As much as Tiburon resident Joe Garfola enjoys pizza, he says he’d get a little homesick whenever he and his family would order a circular pie.

Garfola is from Detroit, where square pizza reigns supreme. He says he noticed there was a dearth of options in Marin County that served it up — so he decided to fill the gap.

“We wanted to have the opportunity to provide it for others, of course, but also have the pizza that we’d like to eat,” he says.

Garfola is now serving up Motor City-style pies as the owner of Squared Pizza at the Bon Aire Center in Greenbrae. After a soft launch in late March, the restaurant had its grand opening May 3.

The shop offers all the classic pizza toppings, from pepperoni and sausage to onions, olives, jalapeños and mushrooms.
