17th Tiburon Mile: Like father, like son


Dutch Olympic gold medalist Ferry Weertman (above) races from San Francisco Bay to become the overall winner of the 17th Tiburon Mile open-water swim from Angel Island’s Ayala Cove to the Corinthian Yacht Club beach on Aug. 19, finishing in 21 minutes, 50 seconds. International champion Ashley Twichell of North Carolina finished fifth overall, in 21:56, to become the race’s fastest woman for the fifth consecutive year. Meanwhile, 14-year-old Robert Placak Jr., the son of race organizer and founder Robert Placak, became the winner of the Mayor’s Cup perpetual trophy, awarded to the fastest Tiburon or Belvedere swimmer in the non-wetsuit division, finish- ing in 29:12 for 26th overall in the age-group races, ninth among boys ages 13-18. Dad won the trophy in 2013.
