Belvedere hires officer, filling fifth position in long-understaffed force

ree

The Belvedere Police Department has hired a new officer after months of four-officer staffing left patrol working 12-hour shifts and overtime.

Tyler Preston, a patrol officer since 2023 with the Mill Valley Police Department, will start as Belvedere’s newest police officer Jan. 4, Chief Jason Wu announced in a statement. Hiring Preston at $104,484 annually brings the department to five patrol officers, what officials call “manageable” and one below “ideal.”

The opening came after Sgt. Tom Sabido announced his retirement effective in September, freeing a position tied up by his medical leave.

Operating with only four officers forced the department to rely on long shifts, schedule adjustments and part-time officers to maintain 24-hour coverage, with support from the Tiburon Police Department during extended absences.
