City’s newest cop brings background in social work, closes gap in police staffing

Belvedere has hired a Mill Valley cop with a background in education and social work to narrow a staffing gap in the city’s Police Department.

 

Joe Devine, 45, joined the force Feb. 20 to become its fifth active officer. The department, considered fully staffed at six, had dwindled to three active officers last summer after one cop left for Novato, another went out on medical leave and the final position had a deliberate cost-savings vacancy. The shortage forced the city to borrow from the Tiburon Police Department to cover shifts.
