As leader of an all-girls robotics team at Redwood High School, Belvedere resident Maddie de Mos says she and her friends think a lot about the future of technology.

She says artificial intelligence has made them worry their future careers will be affected by automation.

“A bunch of my friends I know were thinking of studying for being a lawyer or studying English,” Maddie says as she walks her dog, Sophie, at Shoreline Park Nov. 11. “But now they’re changing their whole major because of what they think is going to happen with AI.”

Maddie, 17 and a junior at Redwood, says she dreams of becoming a mechanical engineer someday, a passion that began when she started the first all-girls robotics club at Del Mar Middle School.
