Prescribed burn planned at Angel Island this week

Tiburon Peninsula residents may see smoke rising from Angel Island as early as Jan. 26, when California State Parks plans to begin burning vegetation piles at the state park.

The burn operation, which received conditional approval from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, could continue through Jan. 29 or 30 depending on weather conditions.

"These burns are being conducted to help manage invasive species, reduce fuel loading and to promote the resilience of the parks grasslands and oak woodlands in the event of future fires," parks scientist Naftali Moed said in a press release.

Officials are urging residents not to call 911 if they spot smoke coming from the island.

State Parks will post updates online as conditions change. The agency can cancel the burns at any time if weather becomes unfavorable.

State Parks may conduct additional burns in February.
