Everyday Encounters: An expecting, athlete mom and her hoops-loving toddler

Jack Yules is already training for the NBA — he just needs to grow another four feet.

 

The 13-month-old can be seen toddling around the basketball courts at Belvedere Community Park almost every day, sometimes several times a day, says mom Kate, who watched last week as he ran about with his arms wrapped around a basketball nearly as big as he is.

 

Like most of the greats, Jack already has a few battle scars. A small healing cut on his right cheek came from playing hoops a few days earlier, mom says. He practices at home, too, as she got Jack a mini basketball hoop for his first birthday.

 

The boy is taking after his parents. Kate Yules, 30, grew up in Belvedere and played soccer at Stanford University. That’s where she met her husband, Sam, who was on the football team, though they didn’t start dating until after graduation.
