Back when Kathy Gray was painting commissioned portraits, she started to think about ways to show prospective clients how true-to-life she could make her art look. She figured if people didn’t know the person she painted, they would not know if it was a good likeness, so she chose to paint a man almost everyone would recognize: Abraham Lincoln.

That portrait, which measures about 4 feet by 6 feet, greets visitors to a new Tiburon Town Hall exhibit of Gray’s work, “The Art of Kathy Gray,” on display in the upstairs gallery July 7-Aug. 27. An artist’s reception is planned for 6-8 p.m. July 8.

Among the other paintings on display in the show will be a portrait of Walt Disney. Gray says she happened to be thinking of all the joy Disney had brought to the world when she saw a photograph of the entrepreneur. In that photo, Disney is holding some papers, but Gray substituted Mickey Mouse in her painting.
