Kenneth C. Lucas, a longtime Tiburon resident, educator, veteran, and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2026, at the age of 98.
Born in San Francisco in 1927 to William Lucas and Edna (Kahn) Lucas, Ken grew up in the city and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1945. He served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1947 before attending San Jose State College, where he earned his degree and later a master’s degree in education.
Ken dedicated his professional life to education in Marin County. Beginning as a classroom teacher, he went on to become principal of Oak Manor School in Fairfax, where he was respected for his leadership, fairness, and commitment to students and their families. Throughout his career, he believed in the power of education to shape lives and strengthen communities.
In 1952, he married Joan Powers, beginning a loving partnership that would span more than six decades. The couple settled in Tiburon in the mid 1950s and became deeply involved in the community they called home. Joan passed away in 2016.
Ken embraced life with enthusiasm and gratitude. He enjoyed skiing, woodworking, travel, classic automobiles, and cheering on the San Francisco 49ers. He was particularly proud of his 1930 Model A Ford, and a 1920 Model T Speedster, which he frequently drove to local car shows and community events.
Above all, Ken loved tennis. A passionate player for much of his life, he built many enduring friendships on the court and remained connected to the sport well into his later years.
Following retirement, Ken and Joan traveled extensively throughout Europe, creating memories that he treasured for the rest of his life. He was a founding member of the Romeos, a group of friends who met weekly for conversation, camaraderie, and laughter. He was also an active member of the Tiburon Peninsula Club for more than 60 years, where he enjoyed generations of friendships and community involvement.
Those who knew Ken will remember his kindness, humor, and unwavering optimism. He possessed a remarkable ability to find joy in everyday life and to make others feel welcome. Whether sharing a story, offering encouragement, or simply enjoying a conversation, he left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Ken was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Powers Lucas; his parents, William and Edna Lucas; and his brother, Don Lucas.
He is survived by his children, Susan Martinelli of Bolinas, Gary Lucas of Tiburon, and Scott Lucas of San Francisco; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Ken’s family is grateful for the many friendships and relationships that enriched his long and meaningful life. His legacy of kindness, humor, generosity, and community spirit will continue to live on through all who knew and loved him.
Please join us for a celebration of Ken’s life on July 29th, 2026, from 2-4PM at the San Francisco Yacht Club in Belvedere.
