Rising men’s tennis stars compete for $100,000 prize in Tiburon Challenger

Rising stars in men’s tennis take over the Tiburon Peninsula this weekend as the annual Tiburon Challenger tournament kicks off at the Tiburon Peninsula Club.

 

The $100,000-pot professional tournament, now in its 17th year, will run Sept. 28-Oct. 5, featuring 32 players in the singles main draw and 16 pairs in the doubles main draw.

 

The event is a key stop on the Association of Tennis Professionals Challenger Tour, with up-and-coming players trying to earn points to become eligible for the ATP Tour as well as the four Grand Slam events: Wimbledon and the Australian, French and U.S. Opens.

 

Singles qualifying for the local tournament takes place Sept. 28-29, with the main draw Sept. 29 and the finals match Oct. 5. Doubles action begins Sept. 30 and runs until the final Oct. 4.

 

Special events include a fashion show 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 2, a free kids clinic 9-10:30 a.m. Sept. 28 and Special Olympics and wheelchair tennis exhibitions 12:30 p.m. Oct. 4 and noon Oct. 5, respectively.
