Thomas ‘Stan’ Meyler

Born in Wexford, Ireland, on December 11, 1938, Thomas Stanislaus Meyler, M.D., known to all as “Stan,” lived a life of medical distinction, family devotion, and humor. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and mentor to generations of UCSF students, and was deeply respected by colleagues.

From an early age, Stan knew he wanted to be a physician. He was educated at Dublin’s Blackrock College and University College Dublin, then trained at the city’s Mater Hospital. Stan came to the United States for medical training and was an intern at St. Luke’s Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan, when Bernadette, his high school sweetheart, came from Ireland to marry him.

After marrying, they moved to Toronto in 1966, where Stan was Chief Resident at Princess Margaret Hospital. Their first two children, Stephanie and Stuart, were born there. In 1969, they moved to California and settled in the Tiburon-Belvedere area, where they welcomed their youngest son, David, in 1972, and made their home on Maybridge Road.

Stan served as Associate Chief of Mt. Zion’s Zellerbach Saroni Tumor Institute and was among the earliest members of UCSF’s Radiation Oncology program, serving first as an Associate and later as a full Clinical Professor from 1972 to 1999. He was admired for his wisdom, generosity, dedication to teaching, and kindness to students and patients alike.

Beyond medicine, Stan was proud of his Irish roots and shared his love of Irish music and culture with his children. He was cherished for his wit and storytelling, especially by his four grandchildren. He loved travel, family summers in Lake Tahoe and Hawaii, and later trips to France, Italy, and Spain with Bernadette.

Stan was predeceased by his wife, Bernadette. After her passing, daily walks with his dog, Charlie, to the neighborhood dog park and the kind, warm community of friends he found there brought him comfort and companionship.

Stan is survived by his daughter, Stephanie J. Meyler of Durham, North Carolina; his son Stuart H. Meyler and daughter-in-law Allison Meyler of Ridgefield, Connecticut, and their children, Henry and Lily; and his son David S. Meyler of San Clemente, California, and his children, Zack and Ben.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former students, and all who knew him. An open memorial gathering for family and friends will be held at Belvedere’s China Cabin on May 2nd from 2-5 PM.
