Tiburon shows modest gains as mid-cycle housing review looms

Tiburon has permitted 54 of the 639 housing units the state requires it to make room for by 2031 — about 8.5% as the planning cycle approaches its midpoint — though accessory dwelling unit development has already outpaced the town’s eight-year projections.

The overall progress figure is higher than the 40 units shown in the annual report reviewed and approved by the Planning Commission on March 25. Community Development Director Shari Meads said prior annual state filings missed units, and the town is working with the California Department of Housing and Community Development to correct them “so they accurately reflect the number of units permitted (54) between 2023 and 2025.” Meads planned to present the corrected figures to the Town Council after The Ark’s press deadline.

The reports — one on the housing element, one on the broader general plan — were due April 1 to the state housing agency and the Governor’s Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation.
