Sienna Driegert says she immediately recognized a kindred spirit in Tatiana Ting when the Tiburon teens first met as middle schoolers at Wow Music Studios in Mill Valley.

Tatiana, an electric guitarist, joined Sienna, a bassist, in a band at the music school. Tatiana is a sophomore. The friends share not only their passion for music, they say, but also the experience of being female musicians in a male-dominated space. They frequently swap frustrations about being the only girl at a jam session or having to advocate for solos.

Last summer, while the teens were interning at Wow Music Studios, they saw an opportunity to turn their frustration into action.

Tatiana, 16, and Sienna, 17, have organized SheShreds Fest, a March 8 event at Marin Country Mart that will showcase female-led bands and gender-expansive artists. The lineup for the festival, which runs 4-8 p.m., includes Tatiana and Sienna’s rock band, Pretty Riot, formed with two other Marin Academy peers; Catfight, a women-led group that plays songs from artists spanning AC/DC and Led Zeppelin to Pink Floyd and Aretha Franklin; and a surprise headliner described as an emerging guitarist and vocalist.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Strawberry-based nonprofit SHE-CAN, which stands for Supporting Her Education Changes A Nation. The organization is dedicated to educating and empowering young women from post-conflict countries to become leaders in their communities.
