Tiburon is working to repair an estimated $20,000 in damage to the irrigation systems at McKegney Green and South of the Knoll Park after someone cut the wiring in March, leaving both fields temporarily without water amid a heat wave.

Public Works Operations Manager Patrick Kerslake said he discovered the damage March 18 while crews were conducting routine maintenance on the fields.

“I noticed one of the turf areas was a bit dry,” he said. “And so we went out to diagnose and check the irrigation system like we normally would and look at some of the valve boxes. … We basically found that wiring had been cut and removed.”

Kerslake, who is also a reserve police officer, said vandals broke into 26 boxes across the two parks, cutting or removing wiring from some and pulling wires out of underground conduits in others. He said the wires were part of the irrigation system’s electrical network.
