Cops: Oakland man who drove into water in Tiburon nodded off at the wheel

Writer: Hannah WeikelHannah Weikel

An Oakland man whose car careened off Paradise Drive and into San Francisco Bay near The Caprice restaurant on March 19 reportedly told authorities he’d fallen asleep at the wheel while looking for the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge after a long day of hiking on Mount Tamalpais. The driver, 39-year-old Michael Elliot, was able to pull himself out of the driver-side window and climb on top of the vehicle while a team of Tiburon Fire Protection District rescue swimmers assembled to move him safely to land, Tiburon police Officer Mike Slobodnik said.
