Blackie’s beach-restoration plan set to receive $1.4 million grant

An ambitious “living shorelines” project to restore and prevent erosion of the beaches at Blackie’s Pasture is tentatively set to receive a $1.4 million state grant to help cover the cost of construction, slated to begin in September 2025 and wrap up about a month later.

The Town Council voted unanimously at its Oct. 16 meeting to tentatively accept the grant from the California State Coastal Conservancy; the conservancy’s own board of directors is expected to formally award the money in November on conservancy staff’s recommendation.

The final design for the project is undergoing some tweaks and is expected to be finished in March, said David Eshoo, the engineering manager at the Public Works Department. Once construction begins, it will take four to six weeks to complete, with Eshoo adding work must be done outside the nesting and birding season designated by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
