Several years ago, Suzanne Siminger was painting plein air and had her easel set up on a high spot at a Petaluma ranch. The Tiburon artist was concentrating on her canvas when she heard a rustling noise behind her, then a loud buzzing noise right next to her. Suddenly, a swarm of big flies surrounded her and her painting. As she fought them off, she turned and saw a huge black Angus standing within two feet of her, staring at her watercolor. She says she didn’t know if she should run or stand very still, but the cow soon wandered off, taking the flies with it and leaving her a bit discombobulated. She named that painting “The Art Critic.”
Locals will be able to see the 83-year-old artist’s works in an upcoming career-spanning exhibit at Tiburon Town Hall. “Suzanne Siminger: A Retrospective” runs May 1-June 29, with an artist’s reception set for 6-8 p.m. May 5. About half of the 40 pieces on display in Town Hall’s upstairs Community Room will be for sale.
