Builder reveals design of $12 mil hybrid vessel for Angel Island-Tiburon Ferry Co.

The New Zealand firm building the Angel Island-Tiburon Ferry Co.’s new plug-in-hybrid vessel has unveiled the design, marking a major milestone in the first-in-California effort to electrify the fleet.

 

EV Maritime is designing the 64-foot plug-in-hybrid vessel tentatively named Watts Up. The company revealed the design exclusively to The Ark following a Nov. 10 interview with CEO and co-founder Michael Eaglen and ferry company owner Capt. Maggie McDonogh.

 

Eaglen said having a rendering ready shows the project is advancing. The team is “more firmly committing when you’re telling other people what it’s going to look like.”

 

The ferry company and EV Maritime partnered in July 2024 to build the roughly $12 million vessel as part of a $24 million grant from the California Air Resources Board awarded through the town of Tiburon. Matching grants bring total funding to $31 million.
