Akash Ghai’s new job as a tennis professional at the Tiburon Peninsula Club comes with one perk he didn’t have while working in a similar role for the U.S. Tennis Association in Seattle: the area’s temperate climate.

Seattle’s weather proved “quite tricky for tennis,” Ghai says.

“It’s quite rainy for six months, and it gets very cloudy throughout,” he says. “So, I wanted to be in a place which … has a lot more sunny days.”

Ghai, 32, moved to town four months ago and has family nearby in Berkeley. So far, he says, he’s enjoying his new job and what he calls a “very relaxed, laid-back community.”

“It’s been very nice to come to this very relaxed part of California and hope to be here for a while,” he says as he wraps up his lunch break June 10 in Zelinsky Park.
