Teacher Kayla Casey welcomes a brand new pre-kindergarten class of students on their first day of school at Reed Elementary on Aug. 18. The new pre-K program is for young 5-year-olds and will slowly expand to all 4-year-olds over the next four years under a new statewide mandate aimed at ensuring universal access to free, high-quality pre-kindergarten classes, which experts call a stepping-stone that results in stronger math and literacy skills and higher engagement among students when they enter kindergarten.
