Tiburon approves $771K battery system to slash police station energy costs

Tiburon is moving forward with plans to install a battery energy-storage system at its police station that is expected to save the town at least $16,150 annually in energy costs.

The Town Council voted 4-1 March 18 to accept a $660,000 grant from MCE Community Choice Energy, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, for Irvine-based Serious Controls to design and install a 400-kilowatt-hour system at a total project cost of $771,817. The town will pay the remaining $111,817.

Councilmember Holli Thier cast the dissenting vote after the majority of her colleagues rejected her attempt to require that those working to install the project be a “skilled and trained workforce,” meaning workers who have completed state-certified apprenticeships.
