Tiburon council vacancy to be put to voters

The Tiburon Town Council has decided not to appoint any of the six applicants to an interim seat on the board and will instead leave the position vacant until an Aug. 29 special election.

While councilmembers applauded the field of candidates, they failed to reach consensus on an appointment after more than two hours of interviews March 1. The only candidate to receive a formal nomination and second from the council was Parks, Open Space and Trails Commissioner Isaac Nikfar, and he failed to win the majority support needed.

Nikfar was vying alongside fellow parks commissioner Chuck Hornbrook, Diversity Inclusion Task Force member Karen Carrera, Planning Commissioner Kathleen Defever, Heritage and Arts Commissioner Nora Noguez and former Planning Commissioner Lou Weller for the interim seat, which became vacant when Noah Griffin stepped down in January.

Though the council in early February agreed to solicit applicants for the interim appointment, Councilmembers Jon Welner and Alice Fredericks said at the March 1 meeting they actually favored requiring the seat to be won at the ballot box in the special election; they both voted against appointing Nikfar, killing the only nomination of the night.
