Tiburon takes step back on housing plan
After hearing from nearly five-dozen residents concerned about Tiburon’s plan to meet state housing mandates by allowing high-density units downtown, the town will attempt to retool its draft to identify alternate housing sites in northern Tiburon and reduce the plan’s current buffer of nearly 140 potential units beyond what is required.
The Town Council at its Aug. 3 meeting chose not to submit the draft 2023-2031 housing plan to the state for review and instead directed staff to make changes that could have a substantial impact on the controversial document, which has drawn intense criticism from residents who say they’re worried about how an influx of potential housing could affect the town’s character, impact traffic and stretch resources.
The revised draft is tentatively set to come back before the council on Aug. 31. The town must submit the draft to the state Housing and Community Development Department for preliminary review. A final draft of the document is due to the department in January.
