Alameda County’s Heather Marques to lead Southern Marin Fire District

Alameda County Fire Department division chief Heather Marques will lead the Southern Marin Fire Protection District, the fire agency for Strawberry and northern Tiburon.

Marques, 52, will take command Oct. 13, succeeding Christian Tubbs, who retired July 1 after more than 11 years as chief and 47 years in the fire service. Tom Welch, a former Mill Valley fire chief and onetime Southern Marin deputy chief, has led the district on an interim basis since June 29 and will return to retirement.

The district’s seven-member board unanimously approved her three-year contract Sept. 23. It pays an annual base salary of $285,000.

“Chief Marques brings a strong combination of operational experience, executive leadership, regional knowledge and a genuine commitment to the people and communities we serve,” Board President Cliff Waldeck said in the district’s announcement.
