Belvedere bends its plaque policy for gazebo builder Larry Hadley
Belvedere’s parks committee has agreed to bend the city’s residency guideline for plaques to honor Larry Hadley, the contractor whose company built the Community Park gazebo for free.
The city’s Parks, Open Spaces and Lanes Committee voted 4-0 Sept. 17, with committee member Marika Bergsund absent, to put a plaque honoring Hadley on or near the gazebo. Public Works Director Antony Boyd suggested that its exact location, design and wording be worked out with Chair Charlie Harrington rather than the full committee.
Because no new structure is being installed, the plaque needs only a design-review exemption from the city before it goes up, Boyd told The Ark.
Former Belvedere Mayor Sandy Donnell, who submitted the request on behalf of a group of residents, proposed wording along the lines of “In gratitude for Larry Hadley for his dedication to Belvedere.”
Hadley’s company built the gazebo and donated it to the city for Belvedere’s 1996 centennial. Hadley personally built the gazebo’s cupola, then transported it by trailer and maneuvered it into place with a crane.
