After examining six potential sites for a downtown stand-up paddleboard and kayak launch, Belvedere’s Parks, Open Spaces and Lanes Committee found just one viable option — a not-quite-accessible public beach by the Corinthian Yacht Club parking lot — and is punting next steps back to Tiburon to pursue.

The conclusion came at the committee’s March 16 meeting, where the paddle-craft subcommittee, led by Committee Member Marika Bergsund, presented its findings on potential new launch locations, regulatory hurdles and neighborhood impacts. The work grew out of a request last year from Tiburon to partner on finding a non-motorized boat launch closer to the shared downtown waterfront.

Two launch sites already exist — Harbor Cove Park in Strawberry, where residents can launch into Richardson Bay, and Paradise Beach Park in Tiburon, which launches into Paradise Cove — but neither is near downtown.

The push for a downtown site goes back at least a decade. The Tiburon Town Council first explored placing a launch along Shoreline Park in 2015, but the idea fizzled when officials determined there were limited options for safe entry because of tidal action and ferry traffic.
