Four candidates are vying for three seats on the Reed Union School District board of trustees in the Nov. 3 election.
Krupa Antani, challenger
Age: 41.
Years as resident: 3½.
Occupation: Stay-at-home parent, former public-school teacher.
Background: Bachelor’s in biology and neuroscience from Rutgers University, master’s in educational technology; has held PTA leadership roles at all three Reed district school sites and volunteered with the Foundation for Reed Schools; previously served as the director of community engagement for the Golden Gate Mothers Group and as the community fundraising chair for Laurel Hill Nursery School in San Francisco.
Key issues: Focusing on the whole child as outlined in the district’s strategic plan; using the district’s Local Control Accountability Plan to gauge whether the funds being spent for interventions and academic programs are resulting in the desired outcomes.

Mike Ghaffary, incumbent
Age: 46.

Occupation: General partner at venture-capital firm Burst Capital.
Background: Undergraduate degrees in computer science and political science from the University of Southern California and a master’s in business administration and a law degree from Harvard University; inactive member of the California bar; has served on 15 nonprofit and for-profit boards, including a 10-year stint on the board of educational nonprofit Year Up Bay Area; served for about a year on the Tiburon Parks, Open Space & Trails Commission.
Key issues: Encouraging the district to develop responsible guidelines around technology use in the classroom; ensuring the district continues to support and challenge all students academically; and continuing to plan for the district’s long-term fiscal stability.

Background: Bachelor’s in international development and master’s in public health from the University of California at Berkeley; serves on the Tiburon Diversity Inclusion Task Force and the boards of Dedication to Special Education and the Marin Center for Independent Living; member of Tiburon grassroots group Parents for Parks and Rec.
Key issues: Providing an academically rigorous experience for all students; increasing transparency in governance; amplifying community voice.

Key issues: Increasing academic rigor for all students; achieving a balanced budget; developing technology policies for district classrooms.
