The free celebration featured music, dancing and children’s activities as attendees dressed in traditional colorful attire to mark the festival of lights, which falls on Oct. 20 this year. The celebration came days after Gov. Gavin Newsom made Diwali an official state holiday starting next year, to be observed on the 15th day of Kartik in the Hindu lunar calendar, which varies from year to year. Next year, that’s Nov. 8.
